LIVE AT MALT
COMEDY FOR A CAUSE
Venue Management
This section shall outline the functionality of Malt as a comedy venue, how 8Events can utilise Malt’s resources, transport for patrons, security and venue capacity.
The venue chosen for “Live at Malt” is Malt Public House in Grey Lynn. This is already a popular gastropub situated in the West-Lynn shops. This venue will hopefully play as a draw card to our target market of the Grey Lynn community.
Utilities (Power, Gas, Water, IT and AV)
As the venue, Malt Public House, is a functional bar and place of trade, they are responsible for the costs of power, gas and water. These factors would normally be considered in a venue’s hire costs. However, for this event, as most held at the site, there is no venue hire fee as there is an agreement of a number of attendees with guaranteed trade that wavers additional fees.
In typical ‘gastro pub’ style, Malt customers often frequent the venue for the purpose of watching sport. This means that there are two large flat screen televisions available which we are able to cast event information on to using Apple TV. There is also at our disposal, a projector which pulls down a large screen. However, due to the plan of the floor and ideal stage positioning, we will not be using it. Along with the television, there is also a fully controllable sound system which has 4 designated areas where you can adjust the sound. This means we can ensure there is an equal distribution of the sound, ensuring even those sitting at the back can hear the comedy acts. This in-house sound system also connects to Spotify, so prior to the event we can create a playlist which is applicable to our target market to set the mood for the evening. Malt is also providing a soundboard with a cordless microphone for use by the acts. All this equipment is free for us to use by Malt with proper assistance and training provided for usage by the Malt staff.
Accommodation
As our event is only for one evening and our target market is mainly for those in the surrounding areas, accommodation is not a necessary addition to our venue planning.
Toilets
Fortunately, as the venue is fully functional and recently refurbished, there is six gender neutral toilets available to be used for both the customers, Malt staff and 8events team. These bathrooms are maintained by the bar staff and then cleaned by an outsourced cleaning company at the end of each night. The bathrooms also offer a changing table for infants and wheelchair access.
Loadings
There is access around the back of the site from Hakanoa Street where large items can be brought into the venue. As the stage, lighting and the majority of the equipment aren't oversized they will most likely be brought through the front main entrance on Richmond Road.
Storage
Ideally, we would wish to use the upstairs office for storage of our equipment. This may not be achievable on the day as that is also where all the venue supplies and safe are kept, so Shane, Malt’s GM may not like having additional people in there.
Security, Alarm System and Procedures
The venue has security cameras overseeing the entrance, front five tables, middle section, two on the bar, the back around the stage and then two on the outside deck. This means that if any instances occur during the evening we will have video footage. As the venue has a supervised license, under 18’s can attend, meaning we do not need a bouncer to check ids. The bar staff are responsible for ensuring minors do not get served alcohol. There is an emergency fire alarm situated at the back of the venue near the bathrooms and at the front of the door. Both have clear instructions for use. In the event of a fire, Shane, the Malt GM, is the designated fire warden and will escort attendees to the fire exits located at the front, near the bathrooms and off the back deck.
Size, Maximum Capacity
Since the refurbishment in 2016 of Malt Public House, there is no exact capacity for the venue as there are a large outside terrace and street tables. However, for our event, we have maximum capacity set at 150 as we would like everyone to be able to see the stage. We have seating for 120 and then allow extra 30 for standing and bar leaners. To control this we will have two 8events staff on the door monitoring how many people are entering the event.
Equipment
Malt is supplying all the tables, chairs, glassware and cutlery for the event. As previously stated they are also are providing all technical equipment and resources. However, as it is not normally set up for performances, we will be providing the stage, lighting, curtains and a microphone stand. All these items are to be delivered to the venue on the day to set up. For more on equipment and resources, see here.
